Yay Pepper!

As I was heading out for my 8 miler yesterday, I caught a glimpse of Pepper's big, brown, doggie eyes and I couldn't say no to her.  I grabbed her leash and opened the hatch to the good ol' station wagon and in she jumped.  We were off to the rail trail.  I contemplated making the run shorter because Pepper hasn't done 8 miles before.  When we arrived to the rail trail (only a 3 mile drive from the house), I decided we would try for 8 and see where it got us.

My girl started off so strong, she was quite happy to be out with me again.  When we reached the 3 mile point, she still seemed strong and happy, so we continued.  At 3.5 miles, you guessed it, still strong.  When we arrived at the 4 mile point & turn around, we paused for a moment, I patted her and told her how awesome she was.  She wagged her cut lab tail in agreement and then we were off.  Well, sort of.  I forgot to mention, it was windier than ever yesterday and it didn't seem to matter which direction we were running, the wind was horrible!

Still, Pepper powered on.   When we arrived at the car, she promptly jumped into the back of the car and laid down.  She was pooped.  And so was I.

Before heading into the house, I had to get a picture of us together to remember this great new milestone with Pepper reaching 8 miles!

What's next for this dog?  10? 15? 20?  Who knows?   I do know that I have a fabulous dog who really seems to enjoy running with me.  Maybe she'll start joining the human girls and I for our long runs!

  2. Yay for you and Pepper! My dog went on a twenty two with me today and still had energy to chase antelope at the end so maybe Pepper can be a distance doggy too!

  4. Gotta love a dog that can run with you. My little Lu is too small to do much more than a few miles (I did a VERY slow 3 miles with her last spring)... but then again she's a chihuahua mix (not really known for their running prowess)!

  5. Aww that's great! Good job Pepper! I have a small pekepoo so she doesn't run with me, but I did take her a 1.5 mile walk one day and about 1 miles she got tired and laid down on the sidewalk lol I started laughing and then had to carry her home! I guess her little legs were tired!

  6. That's awesome! I bet you feel safer having her along side you. I know I would. I hate when dogs chase or follow me when I'm running. Good job on 8 miles in the wind - another runner's nuisance! :)

  7. Yay Pepper! I really want to start Murphy running with me...Kaia is a lost cause on a leash. We should do the canicross with them next year at Pineland.

    1. I have thought about that one - I do think it would be in the cards for next year - I just need to run with her on trails and where there are more dogs...just to see how she is. Yes - you should run with Murphy. I bet he'd love it!

  12. Yay for Pepper! I keep wanting to try a little longer with the one I run with the most. She's done 7 but I know she could easily do more, just need to take her somewhere like the rail trail!

    1. The rail trail helps for sure. I don't know that I could take her on the road for that distance. It was stressful taking her for 3.5 miles on my road!

  13. Awwww - how fun! We've tried running with ours several times. Just a huge disaster - and accident waiting to happen (trip and fall). We'll just stick to walks LOL

    1. Pepper used to do that all of the time but I've gotten her a Halti collar and no more trying to kill me and no more pulling!

  14. we finally got our dogs trained to walk well on a leash. once they're really good at it i can't wait to start running with one of them without him pulling me the whole way. SO EXCITED!

    1. I said above, Pepper used to pull like mad! I bought her a Halti collar and it has made our runs fantastic. It did take her little while to adjust to the collar but now our runs are great!

  15. Pepper is so awesome! I love her! I was reading this post last night and just now got around to commenting and I showed Bernie her picture, he likes her! (He is after all part black lab).

That is a great distance for a dog!

  17. That is AWESOME - way to go pepper :) Rex got injured on a 5 mile WALK yesterday. poor guy. I feel bad, he has gotten so fat. I've been trying to take him out for runs to build up his millage. We'll see

  18. Go Pepper go! Awesome job girl. I love taking my dog with me when I run, but she's tiny so I limit her to 5 miles. I also wonder if other people are annoyed with dogs so I leave her at home when I do group work. It is hard to leave her when she breaks out her puppy eyes though, I feel ya on that

  19. That is rock star status! My pup (7 years old, but forever my pup) is usually good for 5. She is really strong with 3, but fades towards the end. Maybe she needs some more training. Congrats on 8, for both of you.

  20. That's awesome! My guy can hike that far but I don't think he could run it all. He loves (and so do I) running off leash on trails. I wish we could run together more often!
