All of this in a little box?

It's not secret.  I'm a huge fan of the UPS truck and FedEx truck.  I even LOVE the USPS truck when it brings me packages...not bills.  Sometimes I think I order things online so they'll come visit and won't forget where I live.  Just kidding.  Maybe not.

Time for a Change

I need to be honest.  I've been packing on the pounds and it seriously frustrates me.  I've packed on a good 15 pounds in the past couple of years.... 8 of them being this summer.  

This summer my body has been going through some weird ass changes.  It doesn't matter how much I run, what I eat/don't eat, I just keep gaining weight.  This seriously pisses me off.  I don't like the way my clothing fits at all.    Also, extra weight on the body makes asthmatic symptoms increase.  Blah.  Not cool!   I don't understand why.  I've had my thyroid tested.  Negative.  Could it be that I'm nearing 40?  But there are so many women out there that are 40+ who aren't packing on the pounds like I am.  Time for a change!

this is to keep it real....

This week I started a detox with my friend, Kristy, to see where it takes me.  To me, detox used to mean starvation.  It scared the crap out of me.    Basically, I'm cutting out dairy, gluten, and high sugar foods.  It's a very clean eating approach.   The downside --- no coffee.   The upside --- green tea and I love green tea.    My starting weight on Monday is above.  I'd like to see where the Arbonne Detox takes me.  4 days in, I'm not hungry.  I have lots of energy and I'm down 2 lbs.

Drinking my smoothies in my Boston cup gives me the motivation to drop this weight and train harder because I seriously want to to get back to Boston as a qualifier this time!

We’re nearing the end of August and even though the summer is coming to an end, I’m super excited about the Fall because of the colorful leaves.  In fact, my very favorite thing about Fall is pumpkin everything! I can imagine myself wearing the Lucia Sweater while I teach in style.

If I had one goal for the Fall, it would be to enjoy each day because you only live once. To achieve it, I know I will need to be more mindful and flexible. And of course I want to look great doing it so I have the Ginger Top on my wish-list…..

Marathon Must-Haves

Happy Hump Day!  Summer is nearly over and marathon mileage is increasing - sounds about normal for me.

I was looking over my marathon plan and race schedule today and I'm on week 6 of marathon training already!  How did that happen?
My fall race schedule is pretty full right now.  I super excited and super nervous all at the same time about this!  

My fall races

Maine Half Marathon -- 10/4
Not only is this a race, but it's part of an all women's retreat with some inspirational bloggers.  Honestly, I feel like I'm hanging with the all-stars and I'm just the lucky one.  

I'll spend the weekend in a gorgeous beach house in southern Maine, attend seminars, practice yoga, dine out and then run the Maine Half Marathon.  Sounds perfect to me!  

Runner's World Festival -- 10/16-18
Then, when I thought it couldn't get any more exciting, I was selected to be one of the Runner's World Influencers to attend the Runner's World Festival this October in Bethlehem, PA.  My homestate!   I had my choice as to which races I wanted to do - the new 3.8 trail race, 5k, 10k, and/or half.  Since this is huge and I want to do everything Runner's World has to offer - I chose ALL FOUR.  Of course!  A total of 26.2 miles in 3 days.   

In addition, hanging out with more celebrity, fabulous bloggers, hanging out with Bart Yasso.  The only thing that gets me a bit nervous is flying there.  I know. I'm 38 and I have never flown.  Thankfully my sister-in-law is a pro at flying and will help me out.  I may need valium before I go.  But the time it's going to take to fly definitely beats out the 8 hour drive 1-way that I would need to drive by myself.  No thank you.  I'll try out the flying thing.

Philadelphia Marathon -- 11/22 
And THEN the final race of the fall - The Philadelphia Marathon!  Another dream race come true.  I can barely contain my excitement.  

With all of this running and training, I need to be GOOD to my body.  That means proper diet, clothing, hydration, stretching, and rolling.  

Water is simply not enough.  I drink a ton of it.  My new obsession in the hydration world has been SOS Rehydrate.  It's seriously the bomb.  Replacing those electrolytes is super important for training and everyday life anyway.  Add in marathon training and then add in super hot/humid training conditions and you increase the need.

Stretching and Rolling
Yoga is my friend.  I love it.  While I haven't had time to go to any classes lately, I'm still making time to do poses throughout the day to keep my (tired) body happy.

Wherever I go...I usually have something super special with me.  Yes.  My phone is always with me.  But in addition to that it's my Trigger Pin.  You can seriously throw away your foam roller and just get one of these.  You will not regret it.

It hurts SO GOOD.  The "double bubble" targets your trigger points so much better than anything I've ever tried before.  I roll every day with this lovely tool...and when we go somewhere - it comes along.

Of course I need to run in clothing.  No one wants to see me run naked.  So, I make everyone happy by putting on my beloved Spandits.  Right now, with the soaring temps, I am obsessed with the new "boardie" length that is mid-thigh.

No chafing at all.  I'm not sure slender and with other shorts - I do get some chub-rub.  Not with Spandits.  I seriously hang out in them so much - running, yoga, biking, swimming.  Yes - I wore my Spandits for my first Tri.  My entire family is a Spandits loving family.  Ward has a few pairs, Izzy has several pairs, and Tucker loves the arm sleeves.

My First Ever Triathlon #TriForACure

My year of "firsts" has been rolling along quite nicely.   It's been quite an amazing ride so far and I'm checking off my races like crazy.  So crazy, I'm backlogged in blogging about them.  I've been enjoying summer with my kids, training for my races, and studying for the Praxis like a crazy woman - blogging has taken a little back burner..... I write blog posts in my head daily.  But when it comes to getting to my computer and actually typing it out - yeah, that's where I drop the ball!

Anyway - I need to tell you all about my first triathlon ever - Tri For A Cure!  If you wanted me to summarize it in one word --- emotional.  

Leading up to the race, my training wasn't very formal or even scheduled.

Swimming:  Thankfully I found a spectacular Tri Training Group with my friend Amy at a local lake.  I was super lucky to make a few great friends.  The swim instructor ROCKED.  She was super patient with me and let's say - I needed a lot of help.  I still need a lot of help.   If you live in the Augusta, Maine area - I strongly suggest you look up Amy Lawson at Kennebec Valley Coaching.  The training groups she hosts are beyond amazing and help all levels of athletes.   I should have started swimming way back in January.  With that said, I started swimming 6 weeks pre-race.  (oops!)  With that said - my progress went from being winded with one lap to being able to actually do 1/3 mile without stopping (but still super slow).    I never mastered putting my face in the water....but that will come.    BUT I did it!!! 

Biking:  Until the indoor bike died early June, I had the opportunity to bike whenever I wanted inside.  When the bike died, I had to face my fears and pull out the road bike, get it cleaned up and tuned and actually ride outside.  I have a pretty solid fear of riding my bike on the road --- cars freak me out.  I was also quite scared of clipping into my pedals.  But I did conquer both.  I got out and did a couple of bricks and felt pretty good about them!

Running:  I run all of the time.  3 miles really didn't phase me at all.  I was just more concerned about the brick part.  

The Day Before:  
I showed up in South Portland the day before to receive my packet, visit the expo and rack my bike.  It all went rather fast and easy.  

The expo was quite amazing and way different than so many other races I've been to.  Each athlete received a hand knit scarf made by a lovely lady either in memory of or honor of a cancer survivor.  I will cherish and love this scarf forever.  

Race Day:
I woke up at 4am and was on the road by 4:30 to get to transition by 5:30.  It opened at 5:30, but I just needed to get there early to get my mind wrapped around the race.  It was rather chilly and rainy - not optimal tri weather, but it wasn't horrible either.  I'll take it over 90 degree race days any day.  

It was a little tricky setting up transition because I didn't want to leave it all out in the rain to be soaked.  I know it was going to get wet anyway - but still!  So I sorted gear into shopping backs and hoped my plan would work.

Just before start time, I took a little walk down to mini transition to see the area before it became super crowded and take in the gorgeous lighthouse - remembering why I was there - for my mom, for Carissa, for Victoria, and Janie.  Four women I love very much.   That's when the tears started flowing.

AND OF COURSE I had my Headsweats on! 

I headed back up to transition for one last bathroom stop, grabbed my super bright, vintage wetsuit, sneakers, and towel and headed back to mini-transition for the race start.  

The opening ceremony is a celebration of the money raised to fight cancer - while women come together to celebrate life and remember those they have lost to cancer.  Again - more tears.  It was quite moving and I was proud to be a part of it and had done my part (thanks to the best donors ever) to raise $450.

Then they started the waves for the swim- beginning with the survivors (who are beyond strong and amazing), then onto age groups, then novices, then relay.  I chose to stay in the novice wave because I had so much anxiety about the swim.   I'm sorta happy I did this because it was near the end and the crowd had cleared out - my family was able to see me swim the entire time...and see me for the bike, run, and finish line easily.  

The swim was hard.  Super hard.  I started to panic in the beginning and seriously had to dig deep to get through it.  I put my face in the water 1 time.  Oops.  But I didn't stop and rest at all, I just did it.  Slowly.  But I did it.  
this is seriously how close Ward and the kids were to me during transition  ---- oh and I see ProCompression socks too!  

Transition was slow.  It's okay.  It's my first triathlon!  I got to throw my wetsuit to Ward and the kids, change into my sneakers and run up to transition.  At transition, I changed out of my sneakers, into my cycling shoes, got my helmet, fuel, and bike and headed to the course.  I was stopped by a volunteer because she could hear by back tire dragging.  She called over a technician and he checked it out, adjusted it and sent me on my way.  

The course was gorgeous.  It went through some great South Portland and Cape Elizabeth neighborhoods, along the MidWinter Classic and Beach to Beacon courses.  It seemed rather weird to be biking these courses.  The bike went well.  I was only passed by 2 women - one complimented my calves as she passed (then I passed her and thanked her)...and then another woman who had a super serious tri bike.  

When I came in to transition, I didn't fall over unclipping.  Huge success. Changed into my Skechers, grabbed some fuel and water and headed out of for the run.   I got to see Ward and the kids again and it made me so happy!  I love my family.

I had done the run last year when I did this race as part of the relay.  The same course - just rainy.  I felt pretty strong here and was only passed by one woman - who was completely dry, and then I noticed she was on a relay team.  

Coming into the finish, I saw my family again.  Overjoyed to see them, I sprinted pass them to the finish, got my medal and then rushed off to find them.   

This was one of the most difficult races I've ever done.

I'm pumped by this!!!

It definitely pushed me outside my comfort level - with the swimming and biking, but I'll definitely do it again.  

I am a triathlete!  

and I almost forgot to share!  Best FB post the day before... one of my friends happens to live along the bike course...and made signs for her friends in the race!  AND she was outside cheering me (and everyone else on too).  Awesome feeling!  Thank you, Kim!

Beach to Beacon Recap

Last weekend I lined up with over 6500 runners in Cape Elizabeth, Maine to run the gorgeous 6.2 mile course along the Coast of Maine.  I've said it before and I'll say it a million more times, I am so lucky to live in Maine and have such gorgeous places to run!

With B2B and the large number of runners for such a small community, the logistics of getting to the race start in the morning require some forethought.  Our first year doing it (many moons ago) we were stuck on "the bridge" and when we finally made it to our shuttle parking lot - we had to sprint to the last bus to make it to the starting line.  Lesson learned --- never listen to Ward.

Since that awful, stressful experience - I've been a little too high-strung about getting to the shuttle parking lots in time.  Perhaps a little too stressed and I may or may not drive everyone around me crazy.  They love me and they know it.

This year I promised to not wake up hours before our meeting time and send text messages to my lovely sister-in-law.  Instead, I stuck to the plan.  Leaving at 5:30 AM.  Which meant that Ward was still in bed at 5:20, but hey, he's a guy and runs mostly naked.  So really, what does he have to do anyway?

At 5:30 on the dot, Jill, Wade, Gretchen, Ward and I were leaving my driveway and heading to Cape Elizabeth.  The day was supposed to be sunny and gorgeous.  A great beach day.   The temps weren't supposed to be crazy hot during the race and there was a chance of rain later in the day.  WHY???  Personally, I would LOVE a rainy B2B!  Anyway, I tried like heck with my rain-dances, but nothing.  Not even a drop of rain during the race.  Oh well!  

We made the shuttle bus in plenty of time and I hydrated like crazy with my super awesome SOS Rehydrate (PS...I have a code for you! --- see the  and made it to the starting line area with lots of time to spare.... but just long enough to stand in the long crazy ass port-a-potty line.   

Gretchen and I had a photo opportunity just before the race with another Spandits Ambassador - Katie...and then the lovely, Kelley, Spandits co-founder, came over for a photo op!

And then I got to take a photo with my speedy pal - Leslie!  I have fast friends.  I want to be like them when I grow up.

Shortly after that, the race started and I cranked my music.  I had a plan to stick to the 8 min/miles - so that's what I was doing.

And I did!  I felt awesome.  Like I could run forever.  Until mile 5.  Then my head started pounding, the course got dizzy.  I wasn't sure what the heck was going on with me.  I saw an ambulance and strongly considered stopped.  I checked my skin and I was sweating...I wasn't dry - so I thought I would just power on to the finish line.  I have bigger/longer races coming up and if I couldn't suck it up for the last mile, I thought I had bigger problems.  Perhaps I'm a little too headstrong.

As the mile marker turned to 6.0, my watch flashed 8:45 pace at me.  Ugh.  Oh well.....  Just finish.  So I did.  51:05 - my official time.  Not my best....not my worst 10k.  A solid effort.

After the race, the plan was to run back to our parking spot at the shuttle site only a couple of miles away, so we did - adding another 2.3 miles onto the daily mileage - a total of 8.5 miles!  

I love how we're sporting visors...3 out of 4 of us in Headsweats.  Hmmm.... I guess Headsweats just rocks!  We need to get Wade on board with them.

I do love the TD photo booth!  Always fun.  

I loved that I received my official time on my phone and through email... A great perk and not having to go look up that info.  But then something weird happened....I got a second text and email.  For ANOTHER Jennifer Boudreau who also ran Beach to Beacon.  I am slightly confused by this because runners were sent an email offering this automated email/text and were to put in our bib #s.  Obviously the other Jennifer Boudreau does not share the same bib # with me - so why am I receiving her racing stats?  

And then even more sadly, Game Face took free race photos and when I search my name, I get two bad finish line photos and several race photos of (you guessed it) the other Jennifer Boudreau.  

I will note that I did send an email to Beach to Beacon and Game Face, regarding this weird mix up, but haven't received any type of response.  I've never had this happen before!   It's not a big deal, just weird.  I'm seriously not upset by this, just confused.

but hey....look at all the Boudreau's in the Sunday paper!  Apparently the Thursday track meet results were in there too....  FUN!

Yoplait Penti #LandofPlenti

It's no secret.  I absolutely LOVE greek yogurt... breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner... anytime of day is perfect for greek yogurt!  Usually I'm adding it to something or adding something to the yogurt.  When I found out about Yoplait's new Plenti yogurt, I seriously got excited!

I searched the Yoplait site and found that my local Walmart carried it!   We made a trip there and were so sad to see that it was not in stock there.   So, I tried the next closest Walmart...and success!

Sadly my local grocery store doesn't carry it - yet.  I'm positive I'll see it there soon!  Plenty comes in 8 different flavors - Black Cherry, Blueberry, Coconut, Peach, Raspberry, Spiced Apple, Strawberry, and Vanilla.  I have tried all but Raspberry and Spiced Apple, only because they were not in stock yet.  I cannot wait to try them because I'm positive they'll be as delicious as the others!

With Plenti Greek Yogurt, I don't have to add anything to it.  It's all there - the flavor, the pumpkin seeds, flax and oats AND it's gluten free.  I love the texture - not too thin, not too thick.  Just perfect!  Perfect for anytime of day.  This is going to make my back-to-school life much easier as well!  The absolute perfect snack for me at school.
