Sperry and Vans are two of the popular brands of shoes designed to be worn in all walks of life. When you think about walking or running shoes, there are a lot of possible options to choose from.

The Sperry Topsiders and Vans Oldskool are two of these shoes that come to mind. In this article, I compare and review these two brands for those looking to select the most suitable out of the two.

I didn’t say best/better because it all comes down to the preferences/style of the wearer. Hopefully, you’ll see what these shoes are and be able to pick one out of them.

Vans vs Sperry: Reviews

Vans Old Skool

The Vans Old Skool is one of the most popular skate shoes of all time. It was debuted in 1977 showcasing the first appearance of the side stripe which has now become a hallmark of the Vans brand.

This iconic shoe shouldn’t be mistaken that’s it’s solely for skateboarders. It’s for artists, runners, athletes, and everybody else. If you’re looking for an affordable, classic, and dependable shoe, you should consider the Old Skool.

Whichever category you find yourself in, this might just be the shoe for you. Here is a rundown of the features of this canvas.

Aside from the signature side stripe, the sneaker features contrasting double stitching and suede paneling on the toe and heel for extra durability.

The collar is thinly padded for quality ankle protection. While the insole and tongue are flexible enough for a firm hold and soft feel. The classic rubber waffle outsoles on the shoe provide lurches a firm grip on the ground balanced and smooth pace.

This is especially good for runners/joggers who have to move quickly…without too much ado. In addition, the shoe is available in several colorways and in different sizes up to satisfy the style junkies.

The upper is made up of canvas-backed with all-white lacing to support the iconic look and classic style. The shoe also has a re-inforced top cap and padded collars to provide adequate support.

Depending on how you wear it, the shoe should last you a couple of years. Some users have reported seeing little tear/hole after some years of use.

Although the core line of Vans shoes looks all the same. But a few are now seeing improvements after a lot of years since the brand’s inception. The Old Skool, fortunately, is one of them.

One of these is the ComfyCush that’s introduced in the premium version of the canvas. This is a comfort foam inside the shoe that levels up the convenience of the ComfyCush version.

There is also arch support in the midsole, a nice introduction.

It helps to lessen foot pain that can result from standing in the shoe for a long time. If you don’t want all the bells and whistles, you can go with the classic one. Unsurprisingly, that’ll come with a low price tag.

Should You Buy or Not

The design is similar to that of the Sk8-Hi except that the Old Skool is lacking in ankle support. This, it makes up for in arch support, if you’re buying the ComfyCush version.

If you’re afraid of ankle pains, you might want to look at other options that provide ankle support. Moreover, the Old Skool is breathable which makes it a summer shoe rather than a winter one.

While it’ll keep your feet cool and safe from heat, water can easily seep into it in winter thereby making you cold easily.

Overall, if you’re looking for a quality canvas at a good price, this is it. But if you’re looking for a shoe you can hold on to for life, this isn’t it.

It can be argued that Vans can make resilient shoes at this price point, given that experience and expertise. Until then, let’s make do with what’s obtainable now.

Sperry Topsiders

The Topsiders are quite comfortable and lightweight and can easily take a beating. The shoes are not only durable but also good-looking too.

However, they may be lacking arch support so they may not be good for walking long distances or standing in them all day long.

If you love your Sperry Topsider and are ready to rock them anywhere, you can get yourself some Dr.Scholls gels to cushion the effect of having them on for long. The Sperry Topsiders come in different color varieties.

The favorite color for people includes classic brown, sahara, dark brown, etc. Depending on you and the dresses you have, you can go with any color that touches your taste.

If you have khaki, chinos, and often don combos, the dark brown should go well with it. Sperry also makes it easy to select a style as they have a picture of all the models in all of the different colors available to make it easy to choose from.

Many local stores also carry the shoes so you can go do a price comparison or just enjoy the ease of picking up one that you like without any shipping stress.

If you’re looking for a functional and practical shoe, go for Vans. Sperry is more versatile so you can go from your office to other occasions donning your Sperry.

Usually, you’ll be able to get Vans cheaper than Sperry. Not by a lot but if you’re looking to save some bucks, then Vans is more affordable.

Also, if you’re living a fast life, go for Vans as it’ll be more comfortable than Sperry. But if you’re easy-going and living a slow life, Sperry is good.

Vans vs Sperry: Comparison

If you like to follow the latest trends in the fashion industry and show others you have a dress sense, then Vans may be more appropriate for you.

Sperry, on the other hand, makes you look mature and a little preppy, so if that’s what ticks you, I’d recommend you go for Sperry. Vans used to be for those looking to skate or just skating enthusiasts generally.

However, we can rule out the fact that the brand has actually pushed out some interesting shoe designs in recent years. Another possible area to look at is the time of the year.

While Vans have more of a winter look to them, Sperry looks to have been made for summer. So, if you have a big occasion coming up in winter, you’d more likely be looking at Sperry.

Sometimes, you’ve to look past the question “Which is better of the two?” and look more at yourself and what you need. That’s why I often don’t title my posts that since one can be better for you in a certain situation and not in others.

If you’re going to be wearing your shoe to work, you’d be better with your Halyard or Topsiders from Sperry because they are more of a moccasin. These shoes will naturally give you the business casuals look than Vans, which are more skate-style sneakers.

So, for those who’re looking for shoes they can wear to work, Sperry Halyard/Topsiders are the way to go.
