Marathon Training and Racing

I've been avoiding this post for quite some time, because once I put it out there, I'm kind of stuck with it.  I've been obsessing about it for months now and I am ready to say I am committed.  Yes, I am committing to a marathon training plan.

The big reveal...




Yes, I have decided to go with the Hanson Marathon plan.  Thankfully my friend, Seth, helped me out with this plan.  I've been observing stalking Ward, Wade, and Joe's Boston Training.   They are doing a modified version of the plan and it's pretty intense.  When I say intense - I mean, each week there are 8, 10, or 12 mile midweek speed runs.  I am lucky to find time to get in an 8 mile run midweek - but now I'm signing up for a 12 mile speed workout?  Oh jeez!  I must be crazy.

To be honest, I've already gone off plan.   Ooops!    Monday was the official "kick off" for 16 weeks prior to Sugarloaf.  And the plan I chose is 16 weeks.  However, with that said, I've been registered to run the Midwinter Classic 10 Mile race this Sunday for a few months now.  I want to do well at it, so I knew that running a 45 mile week on race week wasn't going to give me race legs (whatever that is).  I'm not so worried because I've had a pretty strong base, so taking a step back this week shouldn't hurt me at all.

I am a proclaimed Musha lover.  I trained for MDI and ran MDI in my Mushas.  Sadly, I noticed last month that they weren't going to last much longer.  I mean, I did log at least 700 miles in them.  I knew the day was coming. I needed to find a replacement shoe.  So, of course, I obsessed about what my next shoes going to be.  I decided that I was going to hold off and get the Musha5, which came out at the beginning of January.


Unfortunately, they came and they went.  There are the Musha5s (green shoe).  They were huge!  I wear a size 8 men's in the Musha4, Universe, and Wave Rider, so why wouldn't I wear an 8 in the Musha5?  Oh well.  So I returned them and then found a great deal of Musha4's at RunningWarehouse.  I really wanted the new Musha, but to get a pair of Mushas that I knew would fit me for $55, heck yes!  


And they came already!  Yay!  Can you believe these are men's shoes?  They really look a little more magenta and purple than anything.  

    

Of course, I had to get in a run the day they came.  They felt like an old friend, just with a lot more life to them.  I am one happy girl in my Mushas.  Pepper was also happy too because I brought her with me.   She hasn't been getting in a lot a miles lately, because I've been running on the treadmill.  Which means poor Pepper is putting on some weight.  Soon the weather will be much better and she'll get out there with me and run more often.  

Moving on to the race coming up this weekend.  On Sunday, the girls and I (and Ward) are running the Cape Elizabeth Midwinter Classic.   The first year Stacy and I registered for it, it was snowed out.  Then last year, the girls and I registered for it.  This was the race when I made a huge mistake.  I woke up that morning, had a fever of 103, but convinced myself that I felt fine and that I was just going to run it anyway.  If you want to read about my BIG MISTAKE, feel free to read about it HERE.


Anyway, in prepping for the race, we decided to scale back our long run last Sunday.   I was scheduled to work at the gym, so Stacy and Carrie joined me for 8 easy miles.  Jill and her family (and my son) went away for the weekend, so Jill ran her treadmill miles by herself in NH.  No worries though, we sent her pictures of us, so she would know how much we missed her.

My goal for Sunday's race is to do better than last year - which was 1:24.  Not too shabby for running it in a half-delusional/feverish.  Let's just hope that I can do better this year and not get sick.  Which, might be harder than it seems because I've been fighting a head cold all week and I think everyone in my house is sick.  No worries, I walk around with Lysol and sanitize everything and I've been popping Vitamin C like a mad woman.

#SilkAlmond All Day Long

I'm not a milk drinker at all.  I've never been one. Nearly 3 years ago, Izzy was diagnosed as lactose intolerant and I made the switch to Silk.  I didn't even know it existed until then and now I'm never going back to regular milk.  Now, I'm not saying there isn't regular (cow) milk in the house - there is.  I just don't drink it and neither does Izzy. We prefer Silk.   

I like that Silk comes sweetened and unsweetened.  I also like how versatile it is.  I use it with my granola, in my coffee, and add it to recipes.   Silk has a variety of delicious recipes you can find on their facebook page.  




One breakfast favorite in our house is pancakes.  They are incredibly easy to make and it's easy to change up the ingredients if you are low on something or want to use something up.  Pancakes are a big hit with the family as well.  They want to eat them morning, noon, and night, so I can never go wrong with pancakes.  The other day, I wanted something sweet but healthy, so I created my own pancake mix with Silk and a brown banana I wanted to use.  

Ingredients:
3 c. flour
2 tsp baking powder
2 c. Silk unsweetened 
0.5 c applesauce
1 smashed banana 
2 eggs
1 tbs raw sugar 

I thought the applesauce and banana would sweeten the mix enough, but I needed just a little more sweetness added to my pancake mixture, so I added in some raw sugar.  I am sure you can add any kind of sweetener you have on hand.  I just happened to have raw sugar sitting out on my counter, so that's what I used.  

Directions:
- mix up all ingredients above
- make pancakes as usual

Then serve with your favorite toppings.  Sometimes I use honey on my pancakes but most of the time I use pure maple syrup.  



For dinner the other night, I lighted up my homemade mac 'n cheese by adding in Silk.  I also had some ham in the refrigerator I needed to use, so I added that to the mac n' cheese as well.  End result:  absolutely delicious!  





Ingredients:
1.5 cups of Silk Almond Milk unsweetened 
1 box of your choice of pasta
1/4 stick of butter
1.5 cups of shredded cheese - you choose*
olive oil

*Every time I make homemade mac 'n cheese, I use a different combination of cheeses.  I like a variety of cheeses and I love the way different combinations change up a regular dish.  This past time I chose sharp cheddar, monterey jack and parmesan.  All of the cheese I use are blocks of cheese that I grate just before using.  But that's just me.  

Directions:
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
- Boil pasta, drain.
- In a saucepan, melt butter, add in Silk and cheese.  Heat on low.  Watch closely and stir often.  
- Cut up ham into cubes, add a smidge of olive oil to a pan to heat up the ham.  I like it slightly browned.  
- Pour drained pasta into baking dish, add ham, pour melted cheese/Silk mixture on top.  Stir slightly.  
- Bake for 20 to 30 minutes until cheese bubbles and browns a bit.

How Do Your Vitamins Measure Up?

I was recently contacted by the folks at FitKit to review a line of their vitamin packages.   I was intrigued by their product because I do believe taking supplements is beneficial for me and being the healthiest I can be.

When I accepted the review, I was directed to go to the FitKit site to complete the quiz - which is an interactive quiz that focuses on your fitness levels, nutrition levels and lifestyle.

A Different Kind of Long Run

Yesterday, the girls and I headed out for our long run from my house.  Weather.com was calling for snow/rain showers and near freezing temps, so I was a bit surprised when it was sunny and warm enough to run without gloves on as we stepped outside.

We have the Cape Elizabeth Midwinter Classic 10 miler coming up in a couple of weeks and that course is a bit hilly, so we thought our run today should be hillier than we've been doing.  So, hills by my house it was.  Sadly, Carrie couldn't make it, but our friend Karen came up to join us.

Then about 4.5 miles into our run, I happened to look behind us and saw two familiar people running up behind us.  I think they thought they were going to sneak up on us, but they did not.

Our girls run party was crashed by the husbands - mine and Jill's.

The other day I ran down to the school's fitness room, just 4 doors from my classroom, to get in a quick run afterschool.   Minutes into my run, I get a text from my best friend, Stacy, who was running on the treadmill at her school - less then 30 miles away.





So, of course, I had to send her a picture of me running.  




I think it's definitely normal.  Don't you?

Best Body Bootcamp Week #2

I am loving Tina Reale's Best Body Bootcamp.  The first two weeks have flown by and I'm definitely feeling stronger.  





Here's my week recap:  

Monday: 5 miles - treadmill
Tuesday: Workout A + Circuit Interval 
Wednesday: 7 miles - progression run, treadmill
Thursday: 8 miles, treadmill + Workout A + Interval Workout B
Friday: Workout C + Circuit Interval
Saturday:  4.5 miles, treadmill
Sunday: 12.3 miles, outside

Total Mileage - 37 miles (for #TeamEscapades #ChillyChallenge)

I'm finding lately I am heading for the treadmill for running.  I'm not about to run outside in the dark.  No way.  I'm a chicken.  And when it comes down to it, it's incredibly convenient for me to walk down 4 days at school and hop onto a treadmill at school.  On a good day, I can crank out 7 miles before having to head home to be there for the boys to get off the bus.  Yes, I'm missing my outside running, but I'm really enjoying wearing shorts and tanks right now while it's so darn cold outside.  

I did swap some days around a little to do workouts on my running rest days, I like to be active all days and Best Body Bootcamp is the perfect way to add in a workout each day and feel good about it.

Guest Post: Featuring Weez!

It is my pleasure to introduce you to my friend Louise.  While we haven't met in person yet, I still consider her a friend.  We've had many great conversations on facebook, emails, and in texts.  Someday (soon, I hope!) we'll meet!  She blogs over at Runners Ramblings.  I encourage you to visit her blog and show her some love.  This woman is an inspiration.


Jen has graciously asked me to do a guest post here on Running With The Girls, and I was happy to oblige. After careful thought I decided to write what I am passionate about!  Running Shoes! :)


Shoes. Everyone needs them. Everyone wears them. Some of us are totally addicted to them. I, on the other hand, only have an addiction for the running kind. (Though if you ask my husband, his reply will differ from
mine!)  This started a year ago, January 2012, when I was researching running shoes. I wanted to do lots of reading to find out what would work best for me, since I was just starting out running, and have had a tendon
repair in my right ankle.


First place I found was the website by Pete Larson. RunBlogger.  He does running shoe reviews, and is very thorough and candid about his likes and dislikes. I think he has run in just about all brands.  He prefers minimalist shoes, and that was where I found myself being led. I did my research and found that he brought up many good points and backed them up with documentation, that running barefoot or pretty close to it, 
(minimalist) is the best way to go. I even took a trip down to Concord NH last summer to a running clinic co-hosted with Dr Brett Coapland. Hearing them speak about good form and proper gait, just reinforced that I was doing the right thing and had made the right choices. They also video taped me running in slow motion so that I could critique myself to avoid injury.


My first pair of minimalist shoes that I bought were the Vibram Fivefinger KomodoSport LS's. I loved the look of the toes, especially with the neon green in-between them. I found however, that going from a regular running shoe like the Asics, to a completely flat shoe, is indeed not a good idea.  There has to be a step down process to get from a higher shoe, to a completely flat one.









My research led me to the Saucony website. The Kinvara 2, was a 4mm drop shoe. The "drop" is the difference between the height at the toes and the height at the heel. I actually fell in love with the shoe and bought 3 different pairs of them, each in a different color. (Gotta match my outfits, lol). Saucony has since come out with the Kinvara 3 and most recently the 4. They have made a good thing even better! These are my go to shoes when I'm running trails in the summer.











Last summer I was chosen to take part in the Mezamashii Run Project by Mizuno. Knowing that I wanted to work my way to a flatter and lighter shoe, I picked the Wave Universe 4, the lightest ones they offered. I fell in love with those shoes and they quickly became my all time favorites. Of course, I couldn't have just one pair, so I got myself another one later in the summer, and I use these when running the roads. I find that when I run in the forest, the rocks hurt my feet, so I prefer something with a bit more cushion.




My regular blog readers know that I lost my father to cancer last June. My running was my escape and my way to release the stress of losing my dad and having to be the representative of his estate. I wrote many times about that, and a representative at Mizuno liked what she saw and contacted me. Before I knew it, I had been sent a complete running outfit for winters in Maine. I didn't have any warm running clothes, so she took care of that issue. I am so grateful to her!


After looking around at all the different shoes that Mizuno has, I got myself a pair of Wave Rider 16's. These are a regular running shoe, similar to Asics in weight. I found that I liked them a lot  but if I run in them farther than 2 miles, they make my ankle start to hurt. I have found though, that I can wear them to work all day without issue, so they are becoming a main staple for walks outside and for work.


A good friend of mine got a pair of Wave Ascend 6's Trail shoes via the Run Project. As much as she tried to fall in love with them, they bothered her feet too much. She offered them to me as we wear almost the exact same size. Not knowing if they would work or not, I agreed to try them out, and I fell in love with them for winter running. They have a very rugged sole that keeps good traction, so I am very happy with them.






Most recently my favorite Mizuno representative sent me a courtesy pair of the brand new Ekidens that have just come out this month. These would be the next step up in minimalist shoes from the Wave Universe 4's. I have these to blog and review. I can't wait to run in them! I am on a one month hiatus from running, due to a surgery I had over the christmas holiday. I am counting the weeks days till I can put these sweet babies on and go running! Here they are, when I just opened the box and was drooling over them... I did get on the treadmill today for a 4 mile walk, and they performed just perfectly. I think these are going to be a big favorite of mine for racing this summer.














This summer I have signed up for a 15K, and a Half Marathon, so these will be my go-to shoe if they are as good as the Wave Universe are.  :)  The last thing I have to say about my shoes, is that I take very good care of them. I keep them all together in their boxes, and I stagger their use so that no one pair gets used all the time. I prefer to keep them in their
boxes, and clean. Yes, I know that is a bit anal, but so be it! ;)







Here is the full stash. The brown ones in the upper left are GoLite's. They are a trail shoe, but I wear them as my winter boots and at work. Very comfortable!  The pink ones next to them are the Therafit  shoes, designed by Dr Lisa of The Doctors Show on TV.  
Nice everyday shoes and I love the pink color!







Take care of your running shoes. They are an investment and when cared for properly they will last longer and you will have a little less chance for injury.

Best Body Bootcamp Week #1

Monday was the kick off for Tina Reale's Best Body Bootcamp.  Honestly, I was a little nervous about how it would actually impact my running.   I'm in the midst of base building and getting ready to begin marathon training - so my time is already pretty packed.



As it turns out, Tina's circuit's are very time friendly.

Before I started, I needed to do my initial fitness test:
Wall sit:  1:07
Push-ups:  16  (what I could complete in 1 minute)
Plank:  0:57
Burpees:  17 (what I could complete in 1 minute)
Cardio:  1 mile in 7:50 on the treadmill

I see room for LOTS of improvement here.  This is an 8 week bootcamp with a fitness test at week 4 and at week 8.  I cannot wait to see how things improve!

Here's my week:  
Monday - workout A, full body circuit, 3 rounds (45 minutes) +10 minutes on bike
Tuesday - 7 miles, treadmill
Wednesday - workout B, core circuit, 3 rounds (30 minutes) + 10.2 miles on bike
Thursday - 5 miles, treadmill
Friday - workout C, full body circuit, 3 rounds (30 minutes) +10 minutes on bike
Saturday - 6.1 miles (outside) with the husband and the "guys"
Sunday - 11.02 miles (outside) with "the girls"

after 11 miles this morning with the girls!


Looking forward to what week 2 brings me!  My mileage is also increasing for marathon training.  I know I can do this.

Gary Allen - this man defines Inspiration #me2dcrun

On Monday morning, Gary Allen was taken to the top of Cadillac Mountain in Bar Harbor, Maine by snowmobile.  He then set out on a 700 mile running journey in snowshoes.  Of course, after he was off the mountain, he did change into his Nike's.  His destination - Washington DC, with hopes of arriving in time for the inauguration.   This man is the definition of inspiration.   You can watch a news clip here.

Gary has had some excellent running partners along the way - Joan Benoit Samuelson joined him the other day, my friend Sarah has joined him a couple of times, even my dad joined him.

My friend Sarah texted this to me while I was teaching the other day.  This is Gary and my dad.  I am so happy my dad was able to make it out there to encourage him and to get the chance to run with him.  And I'm incredibly jealous!

A+ For FRS #HealthySlim


Just after Christmas, I received a box of packed full of goodies from FRS.   Of course, whenever I receive goodies in the mail, I usually have to fend off the kids and husband.  But this time, I had a hard time keeping them away.  



And you can see why!  Check out the selection they sent me!  Energy, Protein, and Healthy Slim.  So many choices.  I didn't know where to begin.  


FRS Protein
I decided that my first taste of FRS was going to be the Blackberry Acai Healthy Protein drink.  I had just come back from a 10 mile run and was quite excited to try it out.   I really enjoyed this one.  The flavor was rich and it had a thicker consistency.  The only downside is that I had to share with Izzy.  I guess it's really not a downside.  She loved it and so did I.  

I was a nice wife and let Ward take the Orange Cream Protein drink with him to work, just as long as he reported back to me what he thought.  He reported that he really enjoyed the drink.  He said it had a smooth taste and a delicious creamy orange taste.

Energy Chews
I was surprised to see that FRS made Energy Chews.  I was even more excited to see that they made a Pomegranate Blueberry flavor.  I tried some of these out before a long run with the girls.  I was hesitant at first because I wasn't sure if the chews would disagree with my system, but there were zero issues.  They tasted great and I didn't get an upset stomach at all.  Win - win.  They are small and very easy to carry along on a run.  


Healthy Energy Drink
I received the Mixed Berry and Cherry Limeade Healthy Energy Drinks.  I thought both had great flavors and would choose either one again if I saw it in the store.  I like that they are not loaded up with sugar and that it is full of flavor and not watered down.  It's also important to note that they only have 90 calories per bottle; which, in terms of an energy drink, it relatively low.  I don't drink a whole lot of calories, but I would drink this one again.  

Hard Chews
I tried out the Orange Healthy Energy Hard Chews.  I did like the convenience of them in the small package; however, there was something about the taste that I didn't like.  They left a funny aftertaste that wasn't for me.  


Healthy Slim Drink
The product I was surprised by was the Healthy Slim line.  Knowing it was the diet version, I was expecting a watered down flavor.  But the Tropical and Strawberry Melon flavors I received were both quite tasty.  I also really enjoyed that they were only 20 calories per bottle.  



What makes FRS different from other energy products? 
FRS products are made up of quercetin.  Quercetin is an all-natural antioxidant found in foods like blueberries, red apples, and grapes.  FRS uses the purest quercetin available – QU995 and combines it with a patented mix of green tea extract and vitamins to deliver optimum performance.

Meal Delivery Service: Diet-to-Go

For me, 2013 is about making changes to my eating habits and choosing healthier meals.  Diet-to-Go arrived at my door just in time to help me kick off my year with a strong start.  

First impressions go a long way with me, and I was impressed from the start.  They arrived in a large cooler packed with ice packs and were still quite cold when I got home and found them.  I received 9 meals, 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, and 3 dinners.  All of them looked amazing and I couldn't wait to dig into them.  I was also impressed with the labeling on each of the packages and the breakdown of the ingredients and nutritional values.  I was quite pleased that the foods were real foods.  



I lack variety and creativity when it comes to breakfast.  Most of the time it's eggs or granola and yogurt.  I want quick and convenient and mostly healthy.   Honestly, I've been getting quite tired of those choices.  To say I was excited for Diet-to-Go's breakfasts would be an understatement.  Not only were the choices.  Not only were the breakfasts delicious and tasty they were convenient to grab on my way out the door.

I also struggle with creativity and variety for lunches.  I usually eat the same thing every single day at school because it's a lot less time consuming to prepare one large meal and divide it into five different containers.  Once in a while I get crazy and make two different meals and split that up.  With Diet-to-Go, I had taste, health, variety, and convenience.  An excellent solution for me.
